NLM - National Livestock Mission
Livestock plays an important role in rural economy by providing livelihood and employment. They act as crucial asset and provide safety net for the poor, especially for women and unemployed masses. In the context of increasing human populations, rapid urbanisation and resultant strain on resources, the role played by this sector becomes crucial for sustainment of economy.
High yield gaps observed in most of these production systems, increasing the efficiency of the livestock sector through sustainable intensification practices are need of the hour.
To this end Government of India launched the National Livestock Mission (NLM) in 2014-15 to promote sustainable development of the livestock sector in the country.
Main aim of the mission is enhancement of nutrition level and standard of living of livestock keepers, farmers through various measures / missions.
NLM focusses on four aspects often referred to as sub-missions, namely :
- Sub-Mission on Livestock Development:
Under this sub-mission focus is on entrepreneurship development and breed improvement in poultry, sheep, goat and piggery sectors. This is done by providing incentives to various stake holders such as farmers, groups, cooperatives, federations and companies for setting up livestock enterprises and infrastructure. It provides help to local governments for strengthening the breed improvement facilities and programmes.

Sub-Mission on Pig Development in North-Eastern Region:
This sub-mission strives for conservation and development of indigenous pig breeds of the North-Eastern region having high genetic potential and adaptability. It helps in establishment of pig breeding farms, feed mills, slaughter houses, processing units and marketing facilities in the region

Sub-Mission on Fodder and Feed Development:
The aim of this sub-mission is to address the problem of scarcity and low quality of fodder and feed for the livestock population. It promotes the cultivation of fodder crops, grasses and legumes, as well as the establishment of silage and hay making units, feed processing units, feed testing laboratories and quality control mechanisms. It encourages the use of unconventional feed resources and by-products.

Sub-Mission on Skill Development, Technology Transfer and Extension:
The main objective of this sub-mission is to focus on enhancement of the knowledge and skills of the livestock keepers and farmers, as well as the extension workers and service providers. It extends support by organizing training programmes, workshops, seminars, exposure visits, demonstrations and field trials on various aspects of livestock management, health, breeding, feeding, processing and marketing. This mission also facilitates the propagation and adoption of appropriate technologies and innovations through various media and platforms
