SEBI was constituted on April 12, 1988, under the Government of India – as a regulatory body under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance.
In the year 1992, SEBI became a statutory body under the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992.
SEBI has its headquarters at Mumbai and having its regional offices in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and local offices in different cities in India.

SEBI’s responsibility is to ensure protect the securities market in India, regulates Indian capital and also safeguard the interest of investors, traders in the Indian stock market by providing a healthy atmosphere and focus on developing the capital markets by enforcing various rules and regulations.
